It is common to come across bicycles while driving, and many drivers are annoyed with their presence on the road. Bicyclists are often considered second class drivers by the aggressive or misinformed driversof cars, trucks, etc. Between a driver and a bicyclist, there are extreme differences in vulnerability to injuries for a cyclist versus a car driver. Respect is important from both cars and bicycles when on the road. And Georgia law dictates both have rights to the road while driving. Simple ways for all drivers, whether on a bicycle or in a car, to show respect is by signaling before turning on an intersection. A cyclist coming up from behind needs to know the intention of the car driver – simple, but it can be a real danger. On the other hand, bicyclist can show their side of the bargain by simply not ignoring a street light and “blowing through” an intersection. Worse yet, if the offending cyclist does so without even stopping to look whether the road is clear, and expecting car drivers to always yield to them. Georgia personal injury law is very clear in regards to accidents involving bicyclists.

Gauging the extent of injuries one might get, bicyclists should take extra care on their part. Whether or not you are within traffic with cars, you are vulnerable to injuries every time you are on accident, even when you’re just on your own. A simple fall on the sidewalk may cause fractured bones. A head trauma can also lead to permanent brain injury.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This adage is so simple yet so true. Approximately, 100 million Americans are bicycling for transportation, exercise and to promote going green. With more bicycles on the road the increase in bicycle fatalities is sure to rise. Bicyclists and motorists alike should do their part to prevent or minimize bicycle accidents. This story is about a 10 year old who was struck on his bike.

Follow the law. Laws exist for a reason. They are there to help us, following them will not hurt you. But following the law is not enough for your protection.

Always be sure to wear your helmet whenever you are riding your bicycle. Bike helmets don’t give you cause for being reckless, but a helmet can offer protection when you fall down. The US government recognizes the importance of a helmet and has set standards on their manufacture. The governing body in charge of this is called the American National Standards Institute. When shopping for a helmet it is important to always get a helmet that has passed the ANSI standards. Having the right helmet is also not useful when you don’t wear it right. Always wear your helmet as instructed by the manufacturer, so it will serve its purpose and protect you. It should be worn level and cover your forehead. Don’t tip it back so your forehead is showing. The straps should always be fastened. If the straps are flying, it’s likely to fall off your head when you need it most. Make sure the straps are adjusted so they’re snug enough that you can’t pull or twist the helmet around on your head. Take care of your bike helmet and don’t throw it around. That could damage the helmet and it won’t protect you as well when you really need it. If you do fall down and put your helmet to the test, be sure to get a new one. They don’t work as well after a major crash.
