Traumatic brain injuries

Traumatic brain injury (TBI, also called intracranial injury) occurs when an external force traumatically injures the brain. TBI can be classified based on severity, mechanism (closed or penetrating head injury), or other features (e.g. occurring in a specific location or over a widespread area). Head injury usually refers to TBI, but is a broader category because it can involve damage to structures other than the brain, such as the scalp and skull.

Traumatic brain injury during Georgia car accidents

Traumatic brain injury occurs in Georgia car accidents. Some people report that they lose some part of their brain functions as a result of TBI. In most cases disorientation occurs with daily functions including work and social behavior. Suffering this impairment can lead to depression causing the victim becomes withdrawn. Oftentimes their only outlet is to vent their frustrations through bursts of anger.

First steps to recovery with TBI

In dealing with this type of situation the family members bear the brunt of this affliction. It is important to understand that there are ways to cope with this. Remember that people suffering from brain damage as a result of TBI are struggling to assert their normalcy. And this is where the first obstacle is encountered. Overcoming this denial that something is wrong with them is perhaps the most important step towards recovery. Without this first step, treatments such as neurological rehabilitation programs may not be able to address the issue. Psychological counseling may or may not be needed depending on how receptive the victim is to accepting their new found limitations.

Personality change with TBI

But along with helping the victim, the immediate family needs to be able to be taught to accept that certain personality changes will occur on the victim. These must be dealt with by discussing this with each member of the family. Support groups are also available should they wish to join them. As a personal injury lawyer we help victims and their family protect their rights. Negligence of others is often the root violation. The incidence of head trauma injuries have remained high worldwide despite repeated warnings about safe driving. It is important to understand that 93% of all car accidents can be attributed to human factor and hence, preventable.

Are there “Blood Biomarkers” for TBI?

Ron Hayes, PhD, Banyan Biomarkers, Inc. has written an article entitled, Possible Blood Biomarkers for TBI, which highlights Banyan Biomarkers, Inc.’s research efforts to develop a basic point of care blood test for use in emergency departments to determine if an injury occurred and its severity.
Although this is a promising area of research into an objective way to diagnose a brain injury, there is still a lot of research that needs to be done. The hope is this type of testing would remove the uncertainty of diagnosis through clinical symptoms or imaging, both of which are important, but show definite limitations and would also help to expedite in determining the level of treatment an individual receives. All factors in helping a personal injury lawyer defend a victim of a negligent accident.
