Atlanta simplifies crosswalks for pedestrians, unclear whether stupid drivers will obey.

The City of Atlanta has recently installed a High Intensity Activated Crosswalk, also known as a HAWK Beacon (picture below). The $120,000 system was installed on Buford Highway, an stretch of road known for pedestrian accidents.

Unlike an ordinary traffic signal, the HAWK beacon only lights up when activated by a pedestrian who wishes to cross. Generally, activation is by a push-button. The HAWK beacon first flashes yellow, then goes to steady yellow, and finally red over a period of several seconds. Conventional pedestrian signal heads at either end of the crosswalk are in “don’t walk” mode when the HAWK beacon is activated, going to “walk” mode when the HAWK beacon goes to steady red.

Patricia Heller was on her way to a new job in Atlanta, Georgia. She flew into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Jan. 29, 2003. And like thousands of others she chose to ride in a taxi cab to reach her destination. But, the 51 year-old consultant was killed instantly when the cab driver hydroplaned, lost control and drove into a line of tree’s. Here husband, Ed Heller, later found out the cab had balding tires, had passed a recent city “cab inspection” and the driver was speeding at the time of the accident. Mr. Heller claims the accident was preventable and is holding the Georgia Department of transportation liable for not cutting down the trees, the City of Atlanta for passing the inspection on the cab and the cab company. Heller is seeking damages for her pain and suffering and his wife’s lost wages. His attorney has stated Mr. Heller wants to make sure this does not happen again. Mrs. Heller was recently hired and working for Bearing Point. Her annual income was $500,000.The claim against the city was dropped.

Greg Shepard, the inspector who approved the cab the day before the accident, no longer works for the city, his lawyer, Joshua Millican, said. According to court records, Shepard wrote “pass” on the inspection form but did not check “yes” or “no” on any of the boxes, including the one marked “tires,” to indicate whether they were in proper condition.

The suit also accuses United Express Cab Co. of failing to inspect its own taxi cab, as required by city ordinance, before presenting it to the city for inspection. Earlier this month the Georgia Department of Transportation issued a formal apology to the Heller family and paid a $600,000 out of court settlement.

Evidence-based strategies that target increasing seat belt use, increasing child safety seat use, increasing motorcyclist and pedalcyclist helmet use, and decreasing alcohol-impaired driving are available.

A Smyrna man remains hospitalized after a motorcycle crash in Canton that killed his wife. Michael Worley Hyde, 51, was working on a charity motorcycle ride for an injured Georgia Power co-worker at the time of the crash on Sunday afternoon. His wife, Charlene Hyde, 49, died at the scene.

2. Motorcycle accident kills one

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – An accident involving a motorcycle has resulted in a fatality, according to the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department. Robert Dill, 69, was killed Saturday morning when he failed to slow his bike enough to avoid a White Toyota 4Runner that was slowing to turn into a driveway.

3. Forsyth County man dies in motorcycle accident

The driver who struck and killed a motorcyclist in Cumming has been charged with vehicular homicide, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday. Diego Castaneda, 21, of Canton was arrested Tuesday night and charged with one count of homicide by vehicle in the second degree, according to police spokesman Frank Huggins. Roger Lee Adams, 60, was traveling westbound on Pirkle Ferry Road around 5 p.m. Monday when a 2001 GMC Yukon turned out of a parking lot and struck Adams on his bike, according to Cpl. David Garrison.

4. Cobb motorcyclist dies from June crash injury

A motorist who made the fateful decision to drive into an apartment complex one afternoon two months ago has now been charged with vehicular homicide. Melodie Hardnett of Marietta was turning left into the Ashley Mill Apartments on Powder Springs Road when she collided with a motorcyclist, said Officer Joseph Hernandez of the Cobb County Police Department.

5. Motorcyclist involved in fatal Floyd County wreck dies

A motorcyclist involved in a weekend wreck that killed a 5-year-old Floyd County girl has died, a Rome newspaper reported. The Rome News-Tribune reported online that Eric Horton, 40, of Cedar Bluff, Ala., died early Wednesday at Floyd Medical Center. Horton crashed his Honda motorcycle into a car driven by Jamie Dunaway, 25, of Armuchee, at the intersection of Ga. 156 and Haywood Valley Road on Saturday afternoon, the newspaper reported. Dunaway’s daughter, 5-year-old Madison Jade Conway, was riding in the back seat of her mother’s Nissan Sentra and died in the crash.

Georgia State Patrol is continuing Operation Full Throttle this year to take the message of motorcycle safety to civic organizations around the state.  “So far, Safety Education Troopers have presented the Full Throttle program to more than 5,000 people in Georgia,” Major McDonough noted.  “The program not only highlights the importance of drivers watching for motorcycles but motorcycle operators conducting themselves responsibly while they travel.”

GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) – The man allegedly involved in a wreck that killed a teen girl on Sunday has two previous DWI convictions, officials said. The wreck, which killed a 17-year-old girl from Bessemer City, happened in Gaston County on Dallas-Cherryville Highway around 9 p.m., authorities say. Authorities have not officially charged the other driver yet, but the NC Highway Patrol plans to consult with the Gaston County District Attorney Monday to see what charges will be filed in the wreck, which injured two other people. COLUMBUS, GA – The Columbus Police Departments Hit and Run Unit is seeking your assistance in obtaining information on a Hit and Run accident. 3. Father, son killed in I-20 crash

A 67-year-old Temple man and his 15-year-old son were killed in a wreck Monday on Interstate 20 between Bremen and Temple. Georgia State Patrol Sgt. 1st Class J.K. Boatright said Bernard Brown and his son, Devon, died in the crash around 4:30 p.m. on the eastbound side of I-20 near mile marker 17. 4. 17-year-old dies in McDuffie accident

THOMSON — A 17-year-old boy was killed when the driver of a car lost control and flipped on Rousseau Creek Road in McDuffie County late Saturday. Authorities say alcohol was involved. McDuffie County Deputy Coroner Sammy Purvis identified the victim as Lawrence Lee Harris III, who lived in the Rousseau Creek Road community near Thurmond Lake. A woman was killed and four family members injured when their SUV overturned about 8 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 185 just north of the Hamilton Road exit. A toddler died late Wednesday afternoon, hours after a pickup rear-ended his mother’s car when she stopped on the Athens Perimeter to let an ambulance pass. The Veyron has been attributed as the world’s quickest production car that can also brake from 252 mph to zero in a mere 10 seconds. The Bugatti Veyron is the world’s most expensive production car. Priced at $1,192,057, it is using a 1001 horsepower engine that accelerates the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds. The car’s top speed is 400 km/h or 253 mph. A private owner in the UK apparently recently hydroplaned and ditched the car outside of London. This is the first Bugatti Veyron accident. The Mail reports the vehicle was registered to 41-year old businessman Kumar Soni, but it’s believed the person behind the wheel at the time of the accident was his younger brother, 39-year old Ajay Soni. It’s also thought that the £830,000 supercar was only delivered a week before the crash and is one of only a dozen such models in the UK. Onlookers claim the car was traveling in excess of 100mph before the driver lost control, hit a Vauxhall Astra driven by a seven-month pregnant woman, and spun three times before crashing into trees beside the road. The reason cited, “The GDOT employee responsible for installing the signs reportedly is on vacation.” It seems under the circumstances installing signs would be too late for this accident.
